A farmer's market favorite for its seedlessness and rich sweet flavor; Pixie mandarins are the best of both oranges and mandarins.
Pale orange in color, Pixie mandarins (Citruss reticulata Blanco) have a pebbled texture. They are late ripening during the months of March and April. They vary in size, shape and peel texture.
Moderately juicy, Pixies are generally small (1" to 3" total diameter) but they can become large and extremely sweet due to their lower acid content.
Pixies offer a source of vitamin C, potassium and dietary fiber as well as vitamin A, calcium, potassium and antioxidants.
Pixies are used in both savory and sweet dishes. Segments can be tossed in salads, used in fresh fruit compotes as a topping for cakes, ice cream or tarts. Pixies can be deliciously paired with olives, pistachios, yogurt, fennel, fresh herbs, poultry and seafood.
