Cara Cara Navel Oranges, Organic and Biodynamic

In Season December through January

Our Beck Grove Cara Cara navels make their seasonal debut in December They are generally medium sized, seedless, sweet and low in acid. Their flavor is more complex than most navel varieties. Its peel is smooth and easy to remove. When ripe, the Cara Cara’s pink to reddish colored flesh is tender, succulent and extremely juicy. The Cara Cara navel orange, botanically classified as Citrus sinensis 'Cara Cara', is believed to be a mutation that occurred on a Washington navel orange tree and was discovered in 1976 at Hacienda Cara Cara in Venezuela. From Venezuela, it was brought into the United States in the late 1980s. It is wonderful when zested and releases a bright aroma.

Cara Caras are an ideal balance of sweetness and acidity and are perfect for eating fresh, using in desserts, baking, preserves as well as juicing. 3-4 medium oranges = about 1 cup of juice 1 medium orange = about 4 teaspoons grated peel

STORING FRUIT: We defer to the experts at the University of California Davis when we recommend storing all of our fruit at room temperature (around 70 degrees fahrenheit) because refrigerator temperatures (usually 38-42 degrees) can damage them and/or prevent them from ripening to their best flavor and texture. Place produce in an open bowl or on a countertop out of direct sunlight to prevent produce from becoming too warm. Once cut or prepared, all fruits should be refrigerated promptly. Obviously, use all fruits and herbs within a few days since longer storage can result in loss of freshness and flavor.
