We have only a few cherimoya trees in our grove, but we love them. A ripe cherimoya has green skin, gives slightly to a gentle squeeze, and is about the size of an avocado. Cherimoyas have a unique flavor – similar to combining a pineapple, papaya, banana, pear and a peach. The fruit is fleshy and soft, sweet, white in color, with a sherbert-like texture, which explains it’s nickname as “the custard apple” and “sherbert fruit.” The skin and dark seeds are not edible, so discard them. Just scoop out the flesh and eat much like you would an avocado.

Cherimoyas are filled with fiber, potassium, Vitamin C, Vitamin B and disease-fighting antioxidants.

Cherimoya is part of the Custard Apple family which includes the sweetsop, soursop and Pawpaw.

Cherimoyas are usually picked before they are fully ripe, so let the fruit ripen at room temperature away from direct sunlight until they “give” slightly when lightly pressed. Refrigerate ripe fruit for 1-2 days.
