Fuyu Persimmon, Organic and Biodynamic

Our persimmon season has ended (we picked all that we could!).  We look forward to harvesting again this autumn.

In season October through December

Swimmin in Persimmons! Our delicious persimmons are back and boy, are they tasty!  These are Fuyu Persimmons, sweet and edible even when they are crunchy.  We find that a few days on the counter, perhaps sharing the company of an apple or banana (a grocer's trick), brings the ripeness along just right.  We eat one or two as a snack each day, and our friends in the Midwest and the South send us recipes for persimmon pudding and persimmon cookies each year.

Do you like Hachiya Persimmons also?  We have those!

We planted Fuyu Persimmons at Beck Grove for a number of reasons: hardiness, resistance to disease and pests, sturdiness (they’re part of the ebony tree family) and adaptability to a wide range of climates. They are deciduous trees, grow swiftly and have a strong root system, making them ideal for helping to recover habitat. Fuyus are a wonderful fruit, about the size and shape of a medium tomato. They are somewhat squat, ranging in color from a deep reddish orange to a vivid golden orange hue, with a flower-like top or stem called a calyx. The taste of a ripe persimmon is hard to describe — because a persimmon tastes like a persimmon and nothing else! The persimmon has a unique sweetness that is very delicate and luscious.  Fuyu persimmons can be eaten like an apple, crunchy or soft.

Some things never leave a person:
scent of the hair of one you love,
the texture of persimmons,
in your palm, the ripe weight.

STORING FRUIT: We defer to the experts at the University of California Davis when we recommend storing all of our fruit at room temperature (around 70 degrees Fahrenheit) because refrigerator temperatures (usually 38-42 degrees) can damage them and/or prevent them from ripening to their best flavor and texture. Place produce in an open bowl or on a countertop out of direct sunlight to prevent produce from becoming too warm. Once cut or prepared, all fruits should be refrigerated promptly.
